A jacket is a mid-stomach–length garment for the upper body. Typically, it has sleeves and fastens in the front or slightly on the side. It’s generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat. Jackets without sleeves are vests. It can be worn either for fashion or protection against the cold.

Coat's are clothing that’s worn outdoors. It has sleeves and typically extends below the hips. Sometimes, it’s much heavier than the standard jackets and is well insulated - built for wearing, and protecting the one wearing it in harsh conditions like winter or snow blizzards.
